Be a Disruptive Influence: Driving Climate Action Before It’s Too Late
David Shukman brought a unique perspective to the Aerospace Technology Institute #ATIConference on why we must accelerate our efforts to address the environmental impacts of our sector. Having reported from the climate frontlines for nearly 20 years, he has witnessed first-hand the profound damage we’re causing to the planet—and the urgent need for action.
“David brings a unique perspective on why we must accelerate our efforts to address the environmental impacts of our sector. Having reported from the climate frontlines for nearly 20 years, he has witnessed first-hand the profound damage we’re causing to the planet—and the urgent need for action.
From the Greenland ice melt to the Amazon rainforest, David has seen the stark realities of climate change unfold, backed by hard scientific data. His journey from cynicism to conviction is a powerful reminder that the climate crisis isn’t just a future problem—it’s happening now. And while the impacts are real and growing, David also reminds us that there is hope. Innovation and rapid shifts in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and other technologies show us that solutions are emerging. But technology alone won’t save us—every action matters, from the boardroom to the workplace, and our choices today will define the future.
To make real progress, we need to embrace disruption and challenge the status quo. Let’s ask ourselves: What can we do now to ensure we’re part of the solution, not the problem? The time to act is now.”
He asks us why Government has not taxed aviation fuel and suggested that societal, political and technological factors need to be addressed- considering the nonCO2 emissions so that we don’t create unintended consequences.
“Nobody gets out of bed and says today’s the day for decarbonisation”
The acronyms of COP is off putting and most people don’t like change, and vested interests will fight against it.
There’s convenience and fossil fuels lobby which have been working against change.
Most processes require long term thinking - it takes crisis and longer term planning to make change.
“How do we position to drive and survive?” Those who position to disrupt and see the technology application … will do really well.
To make real progress, we need to embrace disruption and challenge the status quo.
Let’s ask ourselves: What can we do now to ensure we’re part of the solution, not the problem? The time to act is now.”
