William Kentridge is a South African artist who is widely known for his versatile practice spanning from painting to performances, opera stagings, large scale installations and video works. Having witnessed first-hand the dissolution of apartheid, Kentridge brings this personal experience into his work which reflects on the struggles and brutality of colonialism, totalitarianism and the apartheid regime. His work has been widely shown in important museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and Zeitz MOCAA, Capetown. On the occasion of this talk Kentridge will be in conversation with Josef Helfenstein and reflect on his decade-long artistic practice and his solo show on view at the Kunstmuseum Basel.
