August 14, 2013, will mark 10 years since more than 50 million people in the Northeast were left in the dark after an overwhelmed electric system crashed into a devastating blackout. The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was part of the international team that determined what caused the outage. Ten years later, PNNL researchers have developed numerous energy management technologies and approaches that are helping to make the nation's power grid more reliable and secure.
