One of the Most Beautiful Cities in France - Annecy is very close to water. The Thiou, the main outlet of Lake Annecy was first used by industrial companies (mills, factories, forges ...) before being invested by tourists. The canals and the maze of streets of the old town symbolize today the city of Annecy.
The city of Annecy has mainly been nicknamed "Venice of the Alps" and "Rome of the Alps" for several centuries. We also sometimes find the nicknames "Pearl of the Alps" and "Blue Lake".
Closely linked to water, a natural rampart, a natural resource and a workforce, Annecy has been shaped by the latter and its urban planning is a testament to this. Lake Annecy has an outlet, the Thiou which is fed by 2 canals shaped by the hand of man: the Vassé canal which flows under the Pont des Amours and the Thiou, which circulates between pleasure boats before making a passage to the very photogenic Palais de l'Isle.
To control the flow of water from the lake and to be able to direct the water with a constant flow to the various water mills and industries previously installed on the banks of the canals, the engineer Sadi Carnot, future President of the Republic, set up an ingenious system of locks on both sides of the old town in 1874. The most visible are located Pont Perrière, upstream of the old prisons and Quai de l'Évêché but the attentive eye will distinguish without problem from many other works.
Lake Annecy - the Pearl of the French Alps - did not always attract Annecy residents. It has long been feared and avoided because its shores were swampy and infested with mosquitoes.
In the Neolithic, Lake Annecy was lower than today (5 meters below) and prehistoric sites on stilts were closer to land. Over the centuries, the level of the lake has risen and during the Little Ice Age of the Middle Ages, the level of the lake even exceeded the current level by one meter. Over the centuries, there have been several major floods and droughts.
In fact, apart from fishing families, The Annecians would prefer to stay away from the lake and enjoyed building their homes high up and away from the lake when they could. In the place of the gardens of Europe was in the 16th century a small neighborhood of barracks where the contagious sick were sent away from the crowds of the city...
The old town of Annecy with its traboules, alleys, alleys, hidden passages and tangle of houses are characteristic. These different passages, even if they are sometimes dark, are the joy of visitors and are used daily by the Annecians. They make it easy, fast and dry to get from one point to another in the old town.
Built near the rocky outcrop on which the castle of Annecy is built, the old town was first built of wood around the Thiou in the 11th century. Several fires destroyed it over the centuries, the last dating from the 20th century. Stone gradually replaces wood and beautiful arches shelter protected passages allowing from the 17th century to circulate without fear of rain. Sainte-Claire Street is the perfect example.
A magnificent lake, unspoilt nature, greenery in urban areas, a varied educational offer, a rich economic fabric, a relatively dynamic employment area, envied growth... All in an agglomeration on a human scale. So many assets that have allowed Annecy to win the first place in the ranking of cities with more than 2,000 inhabitants where life is good.
