The Background: Orissa is a land of pastorals. It's history , it's legends and anecdotes , and it's cultural rites since time immemorial have been suffused with rhythms of dance and music. Whether it's long coastline or high lands and plateau, all have been habitats of a rich folk culture. In this milieu, the efforts of Susmita Das , an eminent singer of the state , to produce an album of enchanting folk music in contemporary format deserves to be recognised.
Gotie Sari (A Mynah Bird) is an enchanting compilation of eight folk songs in Odia which expresses various aspects of pastoral melodies from soulful to the raucous. They have been composed by both new and experienced writers of considerable literary standing. Although the language is Odia, the style of the composition and manner of rendering have gone beyond the language frontier. They elicit the best of the pan Indian and even international folk music tradition. Gotie Sari is a unique blend of sweet pastoral heritage placed in the folds of contemporary music.
