This is the first in a lecture series entitled "Current Concepts in Brachial Plexus Management". This talk details the important brachial plexus anatomy and the mechanics of traction injury with avulsions and ruptures in the supraclavicular lesion. There is an explanation of the relevance of the Leffert Classification system for BPI. Later talks will explain how individual nerve injuries can be graded in terms of severity, the assessment of peripheral nerve injury, investigations in BPI, PNI reconstructive ladder, timing of intervention in BPI and modern reconstructive strategies including nerve transfer surgery.
