River and Harbour Sand Bars make up a large proportion of Aotearoa New Zealand’s coastline and unfortunately, over the last decade, 29 preventable drowning deaths have occurred on these stretches of water. This is a number Coastguard is working hard to reduce in collaboration with Safer Boating.
In this video you’ll learn key info about this particular bar and hear insights from local mana whenua and Coastguard volunteers who service the Manukau Harbour area, all with the aim of equipping you with the know-how to make the right decision about crossing this dangerous bar.
Through the creation of this Bar Awareness series, we’re aiming to reduce the risk of boating related drownings by enabling more New Zealanders to make the right decision when considering crossing a bar.
