[ Ссылка ] Russian scientist Valentin Danilov has walked free on parole after serving eight years of a 13 year sentence on charges of spying for China. The events happened during President Vladimir Putin's first term in office according to officials.
An initial decision to acquit him was overturned and he was sentenced in a second trial.
Danilov who walked free from the prison in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk said that he regarded himself as a political prisoner. Human rights activists said the scientist's case was an example of the Kremlin's use of the courts against opponents. He always denied the charges saying the information he sold was already available from public sources.
