Under the Ottomans the 5 melodies for the 5 Athan per day were each specifically chosen for a reason:

- The Fajr melody for Athan is to wake you up and keep you awake
- The Dhuhr melody is the Hijaz style
- The Asr melody is the Egypt style
- The Maghrib melody is quick, because Maghrib is a short period
- The Isha melody is sad, because it's the last prayer of the day
