L'Eau Michel Beach and Mud Volcano is located in Bunsee Trace off the Penal Rock Road in Penal, South Trinidad.
In the rainy season this road is impassable to regular vehicles.
It takes about 30 minutes depending on the weather and how water logged the mud road is to get to the mud volcano. It then takes another 20-30 minutes to hike down to the beach, passing through the teak and finally descending through the coastal rainforest lined with crabholes. SNEAKERS MANDATORY!
There are 1100 mud volcanoes worldwide, however scientists claim there are mud volcanoes on Mars. At least 18 mud volcanoes are located in Trinidad and some were studied by researchers as analog habitats for possible microbial life on MARS! HOW COOL!
They are not true volcanoes like those emitting magma, but natural gas mixes with salt water and clay which creates mud that is spewed out with mostly methane gas.
On Feb 23rd 1997 the Piparo Mud Volcano in central Trinidad erupted leaving 108 people homeless however many livestock were buried by the eruption of mud.
The Southern coast not too far from the Beach is where Christopher Columbus on 31st July 1498 docked and named the island, La Isla de La Trinidad, the trinity where he saw 3 peaks of the southern range. On maps this channel is known as the Columbus channel.
