CHANGING OF THE GUARD
The popular Changing of the Guard ceremony in Athens takes place every day after every hour. It happens in Syntagma Square in front of the Hellenic Parliament building. The Evzones (guards) are members of the Greek army that have been selected to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a high honor to be selected to be an Evzone. We went on a Sunday at 11:00 to watch the ceremony and did not get there early enough to be able to get good views, so we just came back after about 45 minutes and had great views of the next ceremony. If you are in Athens, it is worth checking out a least one Changing of the Guard ceremony.
ANCIENT AGORA OF ATHENS
The Ancient Agora was the market place or meeting place in ancient Athens. It was once the place where philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle discussed ideas. Today it is a large archaeological site with plenty of historically significant ruins. One of the best preserved ancient temples in Greece is found inside the Ancient Agora of Athens. That temple is called the Temple of Hephaestus. It was build around the same time as the Parthenon. We enjoyed walking around the Ancient Agora because there were less tourists than the Parthenon and a lot of greenery. The cost to enter the Ancient Agora is €10, but we bought the €30 combo ticket that included entry the Parthenon, Ancient Agora, and several other sites in Athens.
HADRIAN'S LIBRARY
Hadrian's Library is found between the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. It was used to house important literary works and as a place to hold lectures. We stumbled upon the library after lunch in Monastiraki Square. It doesn't take a lot of time to visit Hadrian's Library, and it is one of the sites included in the Acropolis combo ticket.
