With Trump at the White House and a fellow conservative now his pick to head up the Supreme Court, what will this mix all mean for the future of American society? If confirmed by the Senate, Neil Gorsuch will lead up a team of 9 judges, all nominated by the President, who serve for as long as they choose and rule on the key debates in society...be it abortion rights, gay marriage, the death penalty or global warming. America's highest court has also long played a key role in protecting the country's constitution....some 80 cases a year are dealt with in its chambers and corridors. Donald Trump's choice then for the body's 9th top judge is therefore crucial, and a chance to swing the balance in the long term favour of conservatives. Among the early cases that could land on the Supreme Court's desk are the multiple legal challenges to Trump's recent and controversial executive order banning travel from 7 mainly Muslim countries...And this spring, in an historic first, judges will hear a case brought by the transgender pupil Gavin Grimm who's been barred by a Virginia high school from using the boys bathroom. The court may also rule in the near future on the issue of parenting rights for same sex couples. And with Trump promising to appoint 'pro Life' judges to the court, abortion rights could once again be discussed, as could a host of cases related to the environment and Obama's Clean Power Plan. But the views and opinions of this new line up, including those of Gorsuch himself, could well throw up a few surprises. In 2003 for example, the conservative judge Anthony Kennedy voted to legalise the act of sodomy, and recently reaffirmed the rights of women to abortion.
