⛔️LATERAL BALL MOVEMENTS⛔️
The LBM’s shown in this video are the croqueta, v pull back and IN ‘n’ out. These are just some of the few lateral ball movements you can practise and perform on the pitch.
Lateral Ball Movements are when you push/pull the ball across your body while running with the ball or taking on an incoming opponent. They are great skills for central midfielders as they allow you to have full control of the ball when performing the skill (due to the nature of the move when switching it across your body).
As a CM, pressure from opponents comes in all directions so you need to make sure you keep the ball close to you as much as you can as you have less space to work with, and these Lateral Ball Movements are perfect for that.
Think about it - let’s look at a linear skill for example (the Stepover) a step-over makes you push the ball past your opponent into space. Now I’m not saying that it won’t work, or you won’t be able to recover the ball after getting past your opponent, but you’re more likely to lose control of the ball if your touch around the opponent isn’t controlled/tight enough. LBM’s are best made when an opponent makes a tackle or lunges in to tackle the ball - from there you’re able to execute the skill, evade and continue dribbling into space quickly as you still have control of the ball.
These skills are also great for stop start situations when you have opponents lunging in for the ball.
