In this video explain the difference between the closed channel stitching, a.k.a. hidden channel stitching, and open channel stitching method of attaching the outsole to the shoe.
To the untrained eye a cheap glued on leather sole will look the same as closed channel stitching. If the new retail price of the shoe is less than $300 or so, it's more than likely not closed channel stitched. If the new retail price is under $150, it's likely not even stitched on at all, but bonded (glued). If the shoe in question can be found on the manufacturer's website, they will generally always tell you if the sole is Blake stitched, or Goodyear Welted (stitched) on. If it does not say it's stitched, it's likely glued on.
I forgot to mention in the video that on a Blake or McKay Stitched shoe, Closed Channel stitching will help prevent water from wicking into the shoe interior.
