Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
In today's video I am covering vestibular disease in the dog. Vestibular disease in dogs is common in older dogs. Vestibular disease causes a dog to lose their balance, because of changes in the middle ear. The vestibular system in the middle ear helps with balance for a dog and humans.
When a dog has vistiublar disease a pet parent will noticed a few things. The first and most obvious change is a dog will have a hard time keeping their balance. Most dogs will cross their feet and stumble when trying to walk. Some dogs will even fall over.
A pet parent may also notice a head title and a nystagmus of the eyes. A nystagmus is when the eyes bounce back and forth very quickly. It can be hard to see unless a pet parent looks closely at their pets eyes.
A veterinarian will complete blood work at the clinic to make sure the dog with vestibular disease is overall healthy.
A veterinarian will provide a shot or medication for nausea and possibly fluids if the dog has not been drinking water. Other medications like an antibiotic or a medication for inflammation will be provided if the veterinarian thinks it is needed.
The good news is that most of the dogs with vestibular disease do recover from it.
