Procrastinating over your PhD can make you feel incredibly demotivated and out of control! The secret is rediscovering your motivation and stopping future you from getting in your own way!
Most PhD students experience episodes of procrastination, it is a completely normal part of the doctoral journey. Often, the things we put off are those we don’t feel motivated to do. That might be because we don’t feel confident about doing them, we don’t realise their importance in achieving our long term goals, or we’ve lost control of our time management! However, tackling procrastination is vital to completing your PhD and getting the most out of your grad school experience.
One common myth about procrastination is that it means you’re lazy. That’s not true. Procrastination isn’t about laziness, it’s about motivation. It can also be about perfectionism, something that’s incredibly common in grad school students. You want all the conditions to be right, and all the dials turned to the correct position before you get started on the thing you need to do.
Ever planned to spend a whole day working on something, but after starting your day late or getting disrupted in the morning you’ve just given up and said, “Not today!”? You may have a little sprinkling of perfectionism mixed in with your procrastination tendencies!
The main thing about procrastination is that it’s something you can push past and tackle. You can equip yourself with tools and strategies to ensure that the next time the procrastination monster comes calling, you don’t have to answer the door!
