Recent research has unveiled an astonishing discovery: a vast Maya city hidden beneath the dense jungles of Campeche, Mexico. Using lidar technology—a method that reveals structures concealed by thick vegetation—researchers mapped over 6,500 structures, including immense stone pyramids, ceremonial plazas, and complex residential layouts. Named Valeriana, this newly identified city may have housed up to 50,000 people, making it one of the largest Maya centers ever found​.

For years, this region was believed to be sparsely populated. However, lidar scanning revealed an intricate network of communities, agricultural fields, and extensive urban development, challenging past assumptions about Maya civilization as primarily rural​.

Thanks to Tulane University’s Middle American Research Institute, which has been a leader in using lidar for archaeology, the team surveyed over 50 square miles with impressive precision.
