The 'Old Man' Hasan Sabbah, also known as 'Lord of the Mountain', formed an elite secret society called the School of the Hashishi (“Assassins”) a religious sect of Ismaili Shi'a Muslims originating in Persia during the 11th century. The name was given to him in the writings of Marco Polo that referenced the sect's possession of the commanding mountain fortress of Alamut Castle.
