Storyline:
Accused of murder, Hoss Cartwright puts his life in the hands of celebrated lawyer Whitney Parker (James Gregory). Unforunately, Parker's glory days are behind him: more to the point, he is now the town drunk. The Cartwrights struggle to keep Parker sober long enough to save Hoss from the gallows. Reviews:
"Fine blend of courtroom drama, bullying, western, and touch of class in 1860's. The occasional references to president Lincoln were as touching as the background music. Whit Parker ruled the entire show, with everyone else, including the Cartwright family, in just "supporting roles". I've seen this show several times, wish I could rate it 12." "James Gregory gives a fine performance as an alcoholic lawyer and friend of Abraham Lincoln who was just a most successful lawyer at the Illinois bar. Gregory has moved west and has befriended Hoss Cartwright and now frequents the bar at the saloon than the bar of justice.
But Dan Blocker has need of a good lawyer when a pair of brothers whom he testified against in court start some trouble with him and one of them winds up dead. The survivor Hal Baylor says that Blocker did the deed and Blocker who was stunned by a blow from the deceased's cane can't remember.
This is where the weakness of the episode came in. I would have thought that Ray Teal being sheriff and friend of the Cartwrights would have conducted an investigation before arresting Hoss and charging him with murder. Especially since Hoss actually does have a witness in his favor, young Michael Petit. Similarly I'm not sure the prosecutor would have been so quick to bring a case against one of the Cartwrights of the Ponderosa, the biggest Kahuna around.
But Gregory truly shines in this flawed episode." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
