Ahead of the African Union Commission elections scheduled for the 7th of February in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, there have been unprecedented levels of public outcry due to the fact that for the first time in its history, the incumbent Chairperson, Faki Moussa Mahamat of Chad, is running unopposed for a second four-year term. His was the only name put forward by any of the continent's Heads of State. The Head of the African Union’s Reforms Implementation Unit Prof Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo explained to SABC News how it came about that there is a single candidate for the position of AU Commission Chairperson, saying it was a transparent process and there was nothing unusual about it.
