(23 Mar 2020) Rome lay empty on Monday during a government-ordered shutdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus, under which all non-essential movements are banned and shops and parks are closed.
The streets and squares of the historic centre of Rome were deserted, as were the neighbourhoods in the rest of the city.
In the area around the Olympic Stadium, usually crowded with people cycling along the river or playing tennis, it was empty.
The number of deaths related to the coronavirus in Italy reached 5,476 on Sunday.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms. But for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness.
