Many years ago, Mexican immigrant Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir) illegally crossed the US border and wound up in LA, where he now works as a gardener's assistant on the rich side of town.
A single father, he scrapes by in near-poverty, determined that his teenage son Luis (Jose Julian) should have a chance in life. But Luis is becoming estranged from his father and drawn into gang culture.
Their lives change after Carlos borrows money from his sister, Anita (Dolores Heredia), to expand his business by buying his own truck. This is stolen almost immediately, prompting father and son to embark on a cross-town mission to retrieve it. Along the way, they finally begin to bond. A major departure for director Chris Weitz after 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon', this is an affecting exploration of the immigrant experience.
