Hey guys! In today's video, we're going to look at the top 5 most common jump rope mistakes for beginners.
Your jump rope journey is going to be full of exitement and thrills, but also failures. The goal of this video is to help you pinpoint where you might be making mistakes as a beginner jump roper. Knowing your possible errors will help take the necessary steps to stop making those mistakes.
Mistake #1: Looking down at your feet while jumping. (00:58)
Looking down at your feet might give you the illusion that you're timing your jumps better. Yet, from personal experience, I can tell you that this habit has more cons than pros.
Looking down will cause your spine to arch while jumping. This can cause serious physical injuries and limit your agility and speed while jumping.
Mistake #2: Opening your hands too wide while jumping (02:22)
Opening your hands while jumping is a very natural reflex. When you open your hands, you're activating your shoulder muscles to help you with the rotation of the rope.
This habit will drain your energy like crazy and will cause you to make more mistakes as you'll be jumping on top of a shorter rope.
Mistake #3: Not sizing your rope the right way (02:52)
There is no one size fits all when it comes to sizing your jump rope. The length of your rope will entirely depend on your goals jumping rope.
I made a video helping you find the best length for mixing speed and tricks into your jump rope routine.
Mistake #4: Not having a strong mental attitude when jumping rope (03:31)
Starting to jump rope can feel uncomfortable. It doesn't feel natural. You might not get your first 100 jumps right. That's part of the game.
You have to be mentally ready to fail multiple times, feel embarrassed in the gym (even though no one cares), get whipped a couple of time, to succeed jumping rope.
Final mistake #5: Jumping too high (04:11)
Just like mistake #2. It is a built-in reflex to want to jump higher. You truly only need to jump rope a couple of cm off the ground. Jumping higher than necessary can also have negative consequences on your body and limit your jump rope performance as a whole.
Jump like any habit, they are easily formed but hardly broken. Put in the extra work to develop good habits in the short term, and see greater improvements on the long term.
