Sharpies (Sharps) was a 1970s Australian youth subculture that was borne from the suburbs of Melbourne Victoria, reaching its peak from 1973 - 1976. Distinguishable by their short cropped hair (top & sides) with longer hair at the back (tails)... and 'sharp' dressed fashion, incorporating tight fitting striped/patterned cardigans (connies), platformed shoes, chisel toed cuban heeled shoes, styled denim jeans or pinstriped baggies. Tattoos, earrings and attitude were also popular fashion acccessories. Aussie rock music with tribal undertones was a huge drawcard for Sharpies to gather en masse at concerts. In 2010 an Exhibition was held displaying items, photos and memorabilia from this unique period in Melbourne's history. Over the 4 weeks it was open it brought together hundreds of those who either lived it, witnessed it or marvelled at it.... and those of us who survived it....
