STORYLINE:
Edmundo Gonzaláz Urrutia, the presidential candidate for the Venezuelan main opposition bloc, launched his candidacy for the July 28 elections on Saturday.
From La Victoria, Gonzalez Urrutia's hometown, the former diplomat invited voters to join forces to achieve what he considers his main goal: a peaceful and orderly change of government.
"We are going to move from division to union, from the abuse of a few to the rule of law for all,” he said.
González Urrutia was chosen by the opposition coalition to replace its undisputed leader, María Corina Machado, who President Nicolás Maduro's government banned from running in the elections.
Thousands of attendees cheered the candidate and the opposition leader, who are trying to end the ruling socialist party's 25-year hegemony.
Gonzalez is the third candidate the opposition Unity Platform proposed this year after two failed attempts to run Machado herself and the philosopher and scholar, Corina Yoris.
