Suzuki has announced the next generation of their iconic dual-sport DR-Z400S and supermoto DR-Z400SM, introducing the modernized DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM. These new models feature advanced technology, a redesigned 398cc engine, and Euro5+ compliance, bringing these beloved motorcycles back to European markets.
Both the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM sport a new twin-spar steel frame, complemented by an aluminum subframe and swingarm. This design not only improves durability but also enhances overall stability and ride quality, no matter where the road—or trail—takes you.
Under the hood, the all-new 398cc liquid-cooled DOHC Single engine delivers an impressive performance upgrade. While retaining the original DR-Z400's 90.0 mm bore and 62.6 mm stroke, Suzuki has reengineered nearly every component. From new titanium intake valves and sodium-filled exhaust valves to an advanced dual-spark cylinder head, this engine promises greater efficiency and power.
Equipped with a cutting-edge ride-by-wire throttle system, these bikes offer precision like never before. A 42 mm electronic throttle body and 10-hole fuel injector enhance fuel delivery, ensuring smooth, consistent power. The engine produces 38 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 27 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, making every ride exhilarating.
Despite retaining a five-speed gearbox, the DR-Z4 series now features a slipper clutch, making downshifting smoother and reducing rear-wheel lock-up during aggressive deceleration—a critical feature for performance and control.
With three selectable power modes, riders can tailor their experience to different conditions. Mode A offers a sharp and responsive throttle for high-torque performance, perfect for off-road power. Modes B and C provide smoother delivery, ideal for slippery or low-grip surfaces, making these bikes adaptable for any challenge.
Safety and control are prioritized with Suzuki’s updated traction control system, offering two standard modes and an additional gravel mode, or “Mode G,” fine-tuned for off-road riding. This mode allows more rear-wheel slip, giving off-road riders the freedom to push their limits.
ABS is standard on both models, but with flexibility: the DR-Z4S lets riders disable ABS for the rear wheel or both wheels, crucial for tricky off-road conditions. Meanwhile, the supermoto DR-Z4SM allows ABS deactivation only for the rear wheel, maintaining front-wheel safety.
Both models come with KYB long-travel suspension, featuring adjustable compression and rebound damping. The DR-Z4S offers slightly longer suspension travel at 11 inches in the front and 11.7 inches in the rear, while the DR-Z4SM has a sportier setup with 10.2 inches in front and 10.9 inches at the back, ensuring top performance for both off-road and urban environments.
From the trails to the streets, the Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM bring cutting-edge technology and a rugged, RM-Z-inspired style to the dual-sport and supermoto world. Ready to ride? The next chapter of Suzuki performance is here.
