We start our tour from the #capital of #Thesprotia in #Epirus. Igoumenitsa is a #coastal #city of 10000 inhabitants and is the second busiest #passenger #port of Greece, after #Piraeus, connecting western Mainland with the Ionian #Islands ( #Patras, #Corfu and #Paxos ) and ports of #Italy like #Brindisi, #Bari, #Ancona #Ravenna, #Venice, #Trieste.
It lies 470 km northwest of #Athens, 323 km from #Thessaloniki and 78 km from #Ioannina. Igoumenitsa is built on the slopes of a mountain. The 670 km long #Egnatia #Highway, terminates at Igoumenitsa, making it a popular starting point for #tourists coming from Europe.
The primary aspects of the local economy are #maritime, #transport, #services, #agriculture and #tourism.
It is known by various names in different time periods. Igoumeni in Greek means an #abbess, the female superior of a community of nuns in an #abbey. The name has been adopted as #Gomenizza in #Italian.

The impressive archaeological site of #Doliani with its castle and ancient ruins occupies a low hill on the bank of #Kalamas River and lies 17 km to the east.
Igoumenitsa is known for being surrounded by several forests and for its blue waters. The nearby #Drepanos and #Makrigiali beaches, with a length of over 7 km offer exotic #relaxing moments, organised facilities, awards and beach bars, a #dreamy image.
