Recently a satellite image of Strategic Early Warning Dual Band Radar System was shared on twitter. The Radar system seems to be deployed on the western border somewhere in Rajasthan. But this not just any radar system, it is used for High accuracy tracking and classification of ballistic missiles, Air Breathing Targets, Satellites, and space objects detection and tracking at very long ranges. The Indian Strategic Forces command will get to know about any missile launch or satellite movement along the Western Frontier of India, giving them early warning and enough time to retaliate and foil any possible misadventure. From the image shared, the radar system seems to be a derivative of ELTA ELM-2090 TERRA, regarding which we will be discuss in detail in this video.
ELTA ELM-2090 TERRA
The EL/M-2090 TERRA is an Israeli ground-based, very long range, strategic Early Warning, dual band radar system produced by Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries IAI. These sophisticated radars are a family of transportable land-based radar systems designed to autonomously detect and simultaneously track dozens of Ballistic Missiles (BMs), satellites and airborne targets at very long ranges. The radar operates under all weather conditions and in the presence of dense electromagnetic environments. These radars have Wide volume coverage and long-range search for all object types, including Low-RCS targets. It has high accuracy tracking and classification of Ballistic Missiles, Air Breathing Targets, Satellites & Space Debris Mapping. It acts as an Early warning with high precision tracking against Ballistic Missiles including accurate Impact and Launch point estimation. The ELM-2090 family consists of the ELM-2090U ULTRA for search & detect mission at very long range and the ELM-2090S SPECTRA for highly accurate tracking mission at long range, operating jointly as a united system. The TERRA system is designed to provide the advantage of the combined UHF and S band radars, ensuring optimized detection and tracking performance on very long-range targets, such as - ballistic missiles and satellites. TERRA's superior performance is achieved by automatic handover between the radars and redundancy features, combined with improved target load support, Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) and its ability to operate in severe weather. The SPECTRA and ULTRA components of TERRA are field-proven and provide a high-performance air or missile defense system designed to confront the full gamut of modern threats. Additional missions may include space mapping, and satellite and space debris monitoring. Both Spectra and Ultra are active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars that are made up of thousands of transmit/receive modules and use gallium nitride technology (GaN) to enhance their efficiency. It automatically cues for instant target acquisition and target handover providing robust performance by the two sensors integrated operation. The system can interoperate with legacy and existing air defense system.
