The Elevador da Glória is one of the three funiculars in Lisbon. This funicular connects downtown’s Restauradores Square to the neighbourhood of Bairro Alto at the top of a hill in just 3 minutes.
It acquired its current look in the 1920s when it was painted yellow, but today it’s most often covered in graffiti. In this video, we are walking downhill from Bairro Alto to Restauradores Square.
Tickets to ride the Glória funicular can be bought onboard, from the driver.
They’re €3.80 (as of March 2023), and allow you to ride it up the hill and back down.
Two cars are permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. Traction is provided by electric motors on the two cars. The cable links the two cars together so that they ascend and descend simultaneously. Each car acts as a counterweight for the other one.
The tram system is situated in an urban area, along an axis that slopes 17.7%, crossing a built-up area of 19th-century buildings, including the Palácio Foz and the Misericórdia of Lisboa.
