Rudolf Kempe was a fascinating character--a German conductor whose expertise (opera aside) stood squarely outside the standard German symphonic repertoire. Naturally he conducted it, and recorded it, but the best of his legacy lies elsewhere. Aside from his natural gifts as an accompanist, whether in operas or concertos, Kempe was above all a colorist--a master of musical texture and timbre. His best work reveals this very clearly.
