This is part 4 in a series of attempts to summit Corno Grande, the highest mountain in the Italian Apennine range. Two years later I return to find the town at the base of the mountain destroyed by an earthquake. Determined to put this mountain behind me I spend a week fighting the elements and the mountain's spite.

Another Corno Grande Summit Attempt Part 4 Video Details
May 4th, 2010 and my 4th attempt.
Two years after my last attempt to summit Corno Grande I returned to Italy and things had changed dramatically. L’Aquila, the town at the base of the mountain had experienced a severe earthquake in 2009. Even a year later the devastation was apparent.
After a long night and day of travel I was at the base of the gondola by 5:15 pm. As in the past, I made my way to the base of the gondola to start the trek. My objective was the abandoned building half way to Campo Imperatore, the plateau at the foot of the mountain. I'd discovered the building on my last attempt.
I intended to use the abandoned building as my base camp. It didn't offer many amenities, but it would provide free shelter from the elements. It was ideal for waiting out the weather. And as in the past, the day ended in bad weather, just what I didn’t need, fresh snow.
Morning of day 2 after another night and another day of bad weather.
It looked like it had snowed out. Campo looked fogged in but I hoped it would clear by the time I got there. Ice and snow all the way. Another NOT perfect day at Campo. The snowplows were out. Visibility sucked even though it was May.
But now I knew about an open emergency room. I could use it as a high stop-over spot from the abandoned building. I took shelter from the snow storm and made a plan for the next day then headed back down to the abandoned building for the night.
Day ended with bad weather again (snowing).
Day 3 and another night and another day of bad weather. Visibility looked poor up above so I spent the day waiting for better weather. And still it snowed all night again.
Day 4 and it was hard to believe, but 2 hours before it was cloudy and I thought it was going to rain so I almost quit but decided to wait a bit longer. And now the sky is blue so I set out quickly.
One hour later the clouds moved in again. I had 45 minutes of sunshine as I reach Campo Imperatore.
I need to go higher but it wasn’t going to happen that day.
End 4th Attempt.
Score. Mountain 4, Livio 0
