Deformation bands are common strain localization structures in deformed porous rock and sediments (e.g. sandstones). They can affect the fluid flow in oil reservoirs by reducing permeability of a rock. Haakon Fossen (University of Bergen) explains their formation, characteristics and occurrences using examples from field and thin section microscopy.
