(8 Mar 2019) Thousands of women staged protests in the centre of Madrid on Friday as part of International Women's Day.
In Spain, where women's rights have taken a strong political overtone in the run-up to a general election next month, many female employees didn't show up to work on Friday.
Others halted domestic work or left the care of children and the ill and elderly to men.
Some activists also called for a walk-out in neighbouring Portugal, where on Thursday the Cabinet observed a minute silence as part of a day of national mourning for victims of domestic violence.
Portuguese police say 12 women have died this year in domestic violence incidents - the highest number over the same period in 10 years.
