World Rhino Day is celebrated every year on September 22. DCKAP has partnered with the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai by adopting two rhinoceros (Ramu and Rhine) to raise public awareness of these gentle giants. The Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros is the mascot of DCKAP as well.
Rhino facts:
1.“rhinoceros’, means “nose horn”.
2.There are five species of Rhinos - White rhino, Black Rhino, Greater One-horned, Sumatran, and Java.
3.A group of Rhinos is called a crash.
4.Rhinos communicate through honks, sneezes, and poo.
5.It’s estimated that there are only around 29,000 rhinos left in the wild
6.Rhinos are herbivores
7.Oxpeckers maintain a symbiotic relationship with Rhinos.
8.Rhinos love mud as it protects them from mud and bugs
9.The horn of a rhino is made of Keratin, a kind of protein that our nails are made of.
10.Rhinos can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.
