What's that black sooty substance that goes everywhere in the fall? It's honeydew, a gift from the Asian Woolly Aphid. The woolly aphids suck the juice from the underside of the hackberry leaves and excrete the sugary honeydue. The black coloring is caused by the honeydew molding.
Keep cars and anything you want it to stay off of away from your hackberry trees in the fall to keep them clean. It doesn't cause any major issue for the tree so treatment is unnecessary unless to prevent the annoying black mold that you find everywhere in the fall under the hackberry trees!
