The United States will withhold $85 million in military aid to Egypt due to Cairo's failure to meet conditions related to the release of political prisoners and other human rights issues. Senator Chris Murphy has also urged the Biden administration to withhold an additional $235 million in military aid, highlighting Egypt's "egregious human rights record." Of the $85 million being withheld from Egypt, $55 million will be redirected to Taiwan, while the remaining $30 million will be allocated to Lebanon. Egypt has faced criticism for its human rights abuses under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's government. These abuses include allegations of torture, enforced disappearances, and political repression. An additional $235 million is conditioned on Egypt's progress in democracy and human rights, with the possibility of a waiver if deemed in the U.S. national security interest. There is also a loophole allowing the $235 million to be allocated to Egypt for specific purposes related to counterterrorism, border security, and nonproliferation programs.
