It is recommended that operators wear dark protective safety goggles when welding.  In traditional industrial welding, there are huge sparks, flying metal and very bright and sustained light.  The intensity of the light, and its UV rays will cause permanent damage to the eye.  

When I was young, I made the mistake of looking at the sparkles made when my dad was welding.  That night, my eyes burned and there was very little my parents could do about it except to help apply ice with a cool towel.  

In jewelry welding, using the arc pulse micro welder, the jump ring will be attached to the grounding clip; there is little to no chance of metal flying off.  While there is a very small or no flash using the Orion Micro Welder, if you are welding day in and day out, you are still at high risk of eye damage.  You should, at the very least wear dark sunglasses with UV protection, and perhaps have a bright light at the workstation.  

During filming, I have learned to close my eyes when I hear the click sound, the warning signal that it is about to weld.  However, whenever we do that, we can make reflexive movements and the electrode will be off the seam, making less secure welds.  You may have to fire more than once to make sure the weld is successful.

It has also come to my attention, after I filmed the video, that there are Chinese arc pulse welders on the market place.  They are different from the Orion brand, which is made in the USA, and they create much more spark.  I have not tried the Asian models, but what I have heard is consistent, but I cannot give any valuable or meaningful insight until I have tried it.  It can be a real hazard if you do not take the necessary precautions.
