40TH READINGS AT CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS celebrates our 40th Anniversary with the 40 best books about Winston Churchill published during the store's forty year existence. We are toasting these books chronologically with a new video reading by a distinguished guest reader every week.
The series commenced on the exact 40th Anniversary of our opening, April 11, 2023, with actor JOHN LITHGOW reading from "THE LAST LION," by William Manchester.
This week we bring you "YOUNG TITAN: The Making of Winston Churchill," by Michael Shelden, one of the best books written about Churchill's early years as a very ambitious young man.
Published in 2013, "YOUNG TITAN" is Book #31 in our 40TH READINGS AT CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS video series, as read by the great jazz vocalist, CATHERINE RUSSELL.
MICHAEL SHELDEN is the author of acclaimed biographies of Graham Greene and Herman Melville, and an authorized biography of George Orwell that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, as well as a history of Cyril Connolly's "Horizon" magazine. He was, for many years, a features writer for The Daily Telegraph and today is a teacher on the faculty at Indiana State University.
CATHERINE RUSSELL is one the finest vocalists in jazz today. Her own albums have been Grammy nominated, and she received a 2012 Grammy Award for her contribution to the soundtrack of the television series "Boardwalk Empire." As a backup singer, she toured with Steely Dan and David Bowie, among others. She also sang at Chartwell Booksellers' Saturday Afternoon Tea Dances, and was a favorite of the store's longtime lobby pianist, the late-Chuck Folds.
