Chilika #lake forms a brackish water lagoon that spreads over the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam in Odisha state on the east coast of India. It forms at the mouth of the Daya River before it flows into the Bay of Bengal. #chilika covers an area of over 1,100 square kilometres. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the largest brackish water lagoon in the world.
Brackish water occurs in a natural environment having more salinity than freshwater, but not as much as seawater. The result of mixing seawater with fresh water creates a fragile ecosystem that supports a variety of wildlife, from dolphins to migratory birds and a host of rare flora. This place, in a nutshell, is a wildlife hotspot.
It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent and is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals.
The lagoon hosts over 160 species of birds in the peak migratory season. Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kazakhstan, Central and southeast Asia come here. These birds travel great distances, some of them possibly travelling upto 12,000 kms to reach the lake.
Chilika also boasts of large fishery resources. It sustains more than 150,000 fisher–folk living in 132 villages along its shore and on its islands.
A 32 km long and narrow outer channel connects the lagoon to the Bay of Bengal, near the village of Motto.
This place also supports thousands of people and fishing is the main occupation in this area.
