CONTACT POINT also Circular Bowing and Body Movement:
In the last video we covered the fundamentals of bow hold and grip. Another essential component for your tone and sound quality is the contact point. Ideally, in classical technique the bow is set on the string at the exact 90 degrees angle and positioned between the bridge and the start of your fingerboard, giving you an ultimate undistorted even tone. Bowing closer to the fingerboard will produce a warm fuzzy tone (reference: Bela Bartok "Romanian Dances") and playing closer to the bridge will give you a metallic mysterious sound (reference: Hector Berlioz "Symphonie Fantastique"). Some modern techniques incorporate a circular bowing - moving your bow in literal circles from bridge to fingerboard. The truth is, you can play in any position, as long as this is the tone you desire to produce! The key is to keep the contact point consistent! Watch my exercises with the mirror and dance moves to demonstrate!
