Much of the Zariman backstory and finer details was information included as part of an ARG (alternate reality game) leading up to the release of the update, and much of which is not available in-game or only referenced briefly through dialogue. This video strings together the events leading up to the accident and after a bit more directly and discusses Kira, the fifth, and perhaps most important member of the Holdfasts.
