The Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) is widely known as one of the best travel credit cards in terms of the rewards it gives you. However, the most valuable points redemption option, the Pay Yourself Back program, is ending at the end of September, and most people haven't even heard of if.
Normally the best redemption option for the CSR is booking travel in the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal at rate of 1.5 cents per point, but back in June 2020 Chase quietly made an announcement that matched this 1.5 cents back but on a broader array of categories. You can now redeem points at 1.5 cents per point on cash back if you spend on certain categories using the CSR. These include Groceries, Dining and Restaurants, Home Improvement Stores, and the following Charities:
- Feeding America
- World Central Kitchen
- Habitat for Humanity
- Equal Justice Initiative
- Leadership Conference Education Fund
- NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
- National Urban League
- Thurgood Marshall College Fund
- United Negro College Fund
- International Medical Corps
- American Red Cross
- United Way
This new redemption option makes the card, at least for the next month, one of the most valuable to own in the world. If you were to earn the CSR Welcome Bonus of 50,000 points by spending $4000 in the first 3 months of owning the card, you would earn the equivalent of $750 dollars in cash back. This makes paying the $550 yearly fee a no-brainer for the first year of owning the card.
In this video I also dive into the other benefits of this card, and whether or not these benefits make the CSR worth the yearly fee even after you have already earned the welcome bonus.
I didn't mention this in the video, but credit cards rewards are never worth paying credit card interest. If you are going to take advantage of cards like this, your need to pay off your statement in full every month.
