Too much power for this old 9" Ford axle housing, I guess. Son's hard start twisted the axle housing, causing the pinion and drive shaft yokes to grind against each other and rise into the transmission tunnel damaging the floor of the cockpit. Drive shaft rose in the safety loop scarring the shaft. And, of course, making a hell of noise. Son didn't know what had happened but told me something was wrong. We left the track and I took it easy going home. But, when we got to the bridge over the St. John's River, I hit a small bump which caused a sound like something was grinding into the road. I pulled over and called my tow truck buddy. When we got home, we jacked the Cobra up and saw the damage. l was at my friend's garage first thing Monday morning and he said the axle housing was twisted and slightly bent. I've already ordered a new heavy duty housing which is being sent to the maker of my Cobra kit. This is a 3 point rear, but will be upgraded to a 4 point. The damage is right where the 4th point would have been. Everything involved will be inspected, and if need be - replaced. Thank God, my son finished the race without further incident.
