On 8th September 2005 Hein Wagner claimed South Africa's first Land Speed Record. Wagner, who is totally blind since birth, was accompanied by sighted navigator Ray Wakefield. The World Blind Land Speed Record was set at Mafeking with a normally aspirated, stock standard V8 Maserati, sponsored by Viglietti Motors Cape Town. Hein reached a top speed of 269.2 and officially set the new record at 242.3 kph (150.5 mph).
