Arizona death row prisoner Joseph Wood was killed almost two hours after he received a lethal drug injection of midazolam and hydromorphone that had only been used once before in an execution in Ohio.
Officials confirmed Wood’s sedation five minutes after they administered the lethal injection at 1:52 p.m. Wood was later seen breathing visibly at 2:02 p.m., and continued to gasp for breath for more than an hour and 40 minutes before he was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m.
During the unusually prolonged execution, witnesses reported seeing Wood snorting and gasping for breath more than 600 times before dying, but couldn’t tell if Wood was in pain. While the execution was underway, the convict’s lawyers also filed an emergency stay asking for the execution to be halted.
This prompted the Arizona governor Jan Brewer to order a review of the process, saying in statement that she was “concerned by the length of time” it took.
