STORYLINE
Kyrgyz citizens living in Russia voted on Sunday in a referendum to choose a new constitution that the interim government hopes will legitimise its power until new parliamentary elections in October.
Voting took place at the Kyrgyz embassy in Moscow.
Moscow is home to many Central Asian citizens, who come to the capital in search of work.
As people went to the polls in Kyrgyzstan, the nation was on high security alert, deploying almost eight thousand police officers and an equal number of defence volunteers to keep the peace.
The vote, supported by the U.N., the U.S. and Russia, is seen as an important step on the road to democracy for the interim government, which came to power after former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was overthrown in a bloody uprising in April.
But questions remain about how successfully the referendum can be held just weeks after ethnic violence in the south left hundreds dead and forced up to 400 thousand, mainly ethnic Uzbeks, to flee.
