In his budget speech of 2016 the Honorable Finance Minister of India announced that of ten private and ten public universities in India would be identified as “Institutions of Eminence”, that would emerge as world-class teaching and research institutions with access to high quality education for common citizens. The public institutes granted the status of “Institute of Eminence” would be provided with a financial assistance of one thousand crore rupees (appr. 0.14 billion dollars) per year for ten years.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) was among the six institutions selected as an “Institution of Eminence” on July 9, 2018. With the conferment of Institution of Eminence status, many challenges had to be addressed. MAHE is a twenty-five year old university with a multi-disciplinary campus housing over 28,000 students, 2,500 faculty members and 10,000 supporting staff, focused on enhancing its visibility through cutting edge research and teaching.
Along with enhancing its presence on social media, the university felt the need to subscribe to Elsevier’s Pure to bridge the gap. MAHE started using Pure in 2017 with Profile Refinement Services (PRS) showcasing faculty research profiles based on Scopus data, followed by customized interface to showcase research infrastructure, research grants secured, and awards and recognition. The ease of integration with Scopus, fingerprinting technology, and open access to all this information through internet search engines were the factors for Pure for being one of the support systems for #MAHE towards its journey to Eminence.
