The Place de la Concorde is one of the major public squares in Paris, France. It is situated in the city's eighth arrondissement, at the eastern end of the Champs-Élysées. It was the site of many notable public executions during the French Revolution, including that of King Louis XVI.
The Place de la Concorde is known for its distinctive features:
The Luxor Obelisk: This is a 23-meter-high (75 ft) Egyptian obelisk decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of the pharaoh Ramses II. It is one of two the Egyptian government gave to the French in the 19th century. The other one stayed in Egypt, too difficult and heavy to move to France with the technology at that time.
Fountains: The square is notable for two monumental fountains designed by Jacques-Ignace Hittorff, and completed in 1840: the Fontaine des Mers and the Fontaine des Fleuves. These are symmetrical fountains that celebrate the maritime commerce and industry of France. #dmaxmaxie
