THE “tramp, tramp, tramp” of 60 pairs of brand new army issue boots and the mana of the predominantly young men wearing them echoed across 100 years in Gisborne on Saturday during the opening of C Company House. A crowd of 3000-4000 attended the ceremony in Kelvin Park and many more watched the parade that preceded the opening.

The 60’, representing the first 60 Maori from Tairawhiti to march off to World War 1 and magnificently kitted out in period uniform, led the 500-metre-long precession. They were followed by 30 men from the first battalion RNIR at Linton, military vehicles, cadets, school students and several hundred 28 Maori Battalion whanau carrying photographs of their loved ones.
