Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bangkok, and for good reason. The temple is absolutely stunning, with its intricate architecture and colorful decorations. The architecture is simply breathtaking. Wat Arun Bangkok is made up of five towers, one main and four satellite spires, the tallest of which is 70 meters high. Unlike any other temples in Thailand, Wat Arun Bangkok defines its uniqueness due to its distinctive porcelain artwork. The temple is built with faience, which is the rarest construction material used in ancient SE Asia and encrusted with stained glass, porcelain, and sea shells.
The central spire allows us to climb up to the top of the temple to enjoy the picturesque beauty of the Chao Phraya River and the vibrant city.
Location & Direction: It is also located in a great spot, right on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun stand in nearby locations, so tourists generally make the Bangkok City Tour itinerary accordingly and end the trip with Wat Arun in the late afternoon or evening to enjoy the sunset view.
1. Take exit from Wat Pho exit gate, cross the road to enter Tha Tien market. After a short walk through this famous dried seafood market, you will find Tha Tien pier and take the ferry. Ferry price : 5 THB one way.
2. You can also take taxis to reach here, but it is better to take the help of Google Maps to guide the driver because many take a longer route or sometimes even get confused with such famous sites.
3. Bangkok has an extensive public bus transportation system connecting all corners of the city. Buses with numbers 19, 57, 83, and 91 pass by Wat Arun. But it is better to avoid bus if someone is not familiar with the routes.
Temple timings: 8.00 AM to 5.30 PM
Temple entry fee: 100 THB for foreigners
The sunrise over Wat Arun is a lifetime experience. You can get into a ferry and enjoy this majestic beauty from the river. Early morning taxi service to the ferry is comparatively high, but the picturesque beauty of sunrise over Wat Arun temple compensates the amount.
Some important points:
1. Wear comfortable shoes as a lot of walking is needed to explore the temple complex.
2. Be careful while climbing the central spire. The steps are very steep. Moreover, aged people with serious mobility issues and joint pains may consider avoiding this climb.
3. Be respectful to the monks and Buddhist culture. Prefer modest dress that covers knees and shoulders.
4. Carry water bottles because it is quite hot and humid in Bangkok throughout the year, and the temple complex is also quite extensive to walk through.
